render v. reality

Wyly Theater - REX/OMA (2010)
Almost true-to form. Still some of that rendering-glow going on, but it doesn’t overwhelm. Good job guys.

Temple St Garage - Paul Rudolph (1962)
There is a certain lightness visible in the rendering, and an abundance of greenery surrounding the parking lot. The actual structure feels dark and heavy due to the material, thicker legs and much fewer archway details. A noble attempt at creating an urbanized mixed-use parking lot with a unique vision that never quite fulfills its promise.

Cooper Hotel - Carlos Zapata Studio (2009)
This appears to be the only rendering made publicly available (at least of the final design) and it really is the roughest of sketches. The massing is pretty much spot on, but the perspective shows the building from its sveltest angle. The glass treatment is depicted as the ever popular ‘glow’ in the rendering, but obviously it never ends up that way.

Hearst Tower - Foster and Partners (2006)
Pretty accurately rendered. The glow-effect and brighter lighting seems to be very common with modern renderings, since it helps make the building stick out from the rest of the skyline.
